Replay Analysis
Watching your own replays is among the highest-ROI activities in improving at StarCraft II. The goal isn't to find the losing moment — it's to find the bad habit that made the losing moment inevitable.
Why Watch Replays?
During a live game, your attention is split across production, army, economy, tech, and scouting simultaneously. You physically cannot observe everything. Replays let you re-observe with no time pressure and unlimited vision — including your opponent's perspective.
In observer mode you can see exactly when the opponent's production went idle, when they ran out of minerals, and how they responded to your moves. That context transforms an "I don't know why I lost" experience into a concrete lesson.
What to Look For
Before watching the action, check: worker count at 4:00, 7:00, and 10:00. Were you ahead, behind, or even with the opponent? Macro deficits here explain most losses.
Was your production queue empty at any point? Any 10+ second idle window on Barracks, Gateway, or Larva is direct mineral waste. Find it and identify what interrupted the habit.
Did you hit the buildings and unit counts your intended build order requires? Any deviation sets up a cascading timing offset — identify where you first went off script.
Was your army pre-split before entering AoE range? Was your retreat path open or cornered? Rewind to 30 seconds before each major engagement.
When did you see the threat (scout, minimap signal) and when did you act? Long delays between "I saw it" and "I responded" are a habit, not just one mistake.
They made specific decisions too. Sometimes you lost because they played well — not because you played badly. Both are worth noting separately.
Using the SC2 AI Coach Graphs
Instead of scrubbing a replay manually, upload it and use the graphs to locate interesting moments in seconds:
- › Economy graph: if your mineral income drops sharply mid-game, you likely lost workers to harassment. Find the timestamp and check what happened.
- › Army Value graph: a sudden cliff in army value = a lost fight. Jump straight to what you did in the 30 seconds before that fight.
- › Build Order tab: see if your opening matched the intended build order or drifted. Identify the first supply count divergence.
- › Strategy ID: confirms whether the AI read your intent as a specific strategy type. Useful for checking if your build is legible.
Build Order Comparison Workflow
- 1. Upload the replay and open the Build Order tab.
- 2. Note the supply count at each major building (first production structure, expansion, tech building).
- 3. Compare against the written build order you intended to execute.
- 4. Find the first supply count that diverges. That's where a habit broke.
- 5. Drill that specific transition in a practice game against AI until it's automatic.
- 6. Replay the drill game to confirm the numbers hit correctly.
Self-Coaching Questions
Ask these at the end of each replay review, not "could I have won?", but:
- ✓ What is my worker count at the 7-minute mark compared to my opponent?
- ✓ Was my production building idle for more than 10 seconds at any point?
- ✓ Do I know what strategy my opponent was running by the 5-minute mark?
- ✓ Was there a fight where I engaged into their advantage? What made me push anyway?
- ✓ What is the single habit I want to drill before my next session?
