Micro Mechanics
Micro control is the art of getting more out of your units than their base stats suggest. Good micro can absolutely flip fights — but only when your composition and macro position are already decent. Micro amplifies; it doesn't substitute.
What Is Micro?
Micro is any manual input applied to individual units (or small groups) during an engagement that changes the outcome relative to A-moving. This includes kiting, split-stepping against AoE, pulling injured units back, and manually targeting priority units.
Most micro techniques require less APM than beginners assume. The timing and decision-making matters more than raw clicks per minute.
Kiting & Move-Shots
Kiting is the cycle of attack → retreat → attack. Fire your weapon, immediately move backwards (or sideways), wait for your attack cooldown, then fire again. If your unit is faster than the enemy or has longer range, you deal damage while they struggle to reach you.
In practice: attack-move your Marines into Zerglings. When the attack animation finishes, hold-position or manually move back one step, then attack again. Even imperfect kiting saves a few Marines per fight. Over a game, that is multiple free supply.
Stutter-Stepping (Bio Spec)
Stutter-stepping is the Terran bio technique: move your entire marine/marauder ball forward one step, attack, move back, attack. Applied to a mass, it minimises the surface area of your bio blob exposed to Banelings, and keeps the ball retreating away from Zerglings while still firing.
The key tempo is tied to the Marine's 0.86-second cooldown. Click attack → 0.86 seconds later click move. Medivacs following slightly behind will heal naturally. Combined with Stim, the rhythm doubles in speed.
Focus Fire vs Spread Fire
Concentrate fire on a single target until it dies. Removes one threat completely. Ideal against high-value targets (Colossus, Ultralisk, Siege Tank) or when you're outnumbered.
Let units pick their own targets (A-move default). Works fine against equal-value targets. Overkill can happen — multiple units shooting a dying target while others fire freely.
Rule of thumb: If there's a high-value splash unit (Colossus, Tank, Disruptor, Ultralisk) in the enemy army, kill it first. Everything else can largely A-move while you focus that priority.
Dodging AoE
Area of Effect abilities (Storm, Disruptor shot, Lurker spines, Banelings) punish clumped armies catastrophically. Spreading your units pre-emptively during the approach — not after AoE lands — is the correct habit.
- › Psionic Storm: 2.5-second dot. Move any unit in zone immediately.
- › Disruptor: telegraphed by animation. Split left/right the moment it appears.
- › Banelings: run units laterally, not backwards — they can chase.
- › Lurkers: reveal with Observer then force position or flank.
