Army Composition

Choosing the right mix of units — and adapting it when your opponent reacts — is the heart of mid and late gameplay. More important than individual micro is arriving at the fight with units that beat theirs.

Hard vs Soft Counters

HARD COUNTER

One unit type dominates another regardless of control. Immortals vs Roaches, Ravens vs bio, Banelings vs bio blobs. If your opponent has massed the hard counter to your composition, you lose the fight almost no matter what.

SOFT COUNTER

One unit type has a stat advantage over another, but good micro, positioning, or numerical advantage can still win. Good control flips soft counters regularly. Know the difference — sometimes you fight smart, sometimes you tech-switch.

This table covers common crossover matchups. Each match-up has deeper nuance with positioning, upgrade disparity, and map context.

Upgrades & Scaling

A +2 attack upgrade can flip engagements. Tier 1 units with +3 attack regularly beat tier 2 units stuck at +0. Upgrade disparity is one of the most underrated factors in army efficiency at lower leagues.

Prioritise upgrades at the start of your tech path, not as an afterthought. Engineering Bay, Forge, and Evolution Chamber should appear early in your build order timeline.

Composition Switching

Tech-switching is expensive: new production structures, sometimes new research paths, and a period where your army is thin while units are rolling out. To switch effectively, you need to be ahead on economy or have a safe defensive position.

Use the Army Composition graph in replays to see when your unit type mix shifted, and whether the timing lined up with a fight or an opponent's tech change.

Reading Opponent Tech

Early scouting reveals tech buildings. A Twilight Council in a Protoss base hints at Blink Stalker or Chargelot follow-up. A Spire hints at Mutalisks. A Starport with Reactor hints at fast Medivac timing.

Build compositions that don't just counter their current army — build compositions that pre-empt likely transitions based on their tech investment. Fast Spire? Park two Turrets per mineral line proactively.
