The Zerg Guide

Zerg plays reactively. Scout your opponent, match their build, saturate bases faster than anyone else, and overwhelm them in the late game. The economy is the army.

What Makes Zerg Different

Zerg produces all units from Larvae — a resource produced passively at the Hatchery (and boosted by Queen Inject). Every unit produced costs Larvae. This means drones and army units compete for the same pool, making the drone-to-army transition a defining skill.

Zerg cannot wall off like Terran or place static defences cheaply in the early game. Instead, Zerg survives early pressure through reactive play — scout the danger, make the exact units that counter it, and overwhelm numerically.

Creep Highway: units on Creep move significantly faster. Spreading Creep with Overlords and Tumors across the map gives Zerg a speed advantage on every ground engagement fought on Creep terrain.

Larva & Inject

Each Hatchery generates Larvae at a base rate of 1 per 11 seconds up to a cap of 3. A Queen Inject dumps 4 additional Larvae into the Hatchery over 40 seconds. A Hatchery running constant injects produces ~5× the Larvae of one left on natural generation.

Inject timing: Every 40 seconds per Hatchery. A Queen on each base injecting immediately when the timer expires is the most economically impactful habit in the Zerg kit.

  • Use hot-key groups for Queens to inject all bases quickly
  • Keep a second Queen per base for creep spread and transfuse
  • Don't let Queens build up 3 Overlord energy without injecting — they cap out and the inject is lost

Creep Spread

Creep spread is a passive map control mechanic. Zerg units move 30% faster on Creep. Spreading Creep toward the opponent's base means you fight all mid-game battles on your own creep highway with a speed advantage.

Creep Tumors: plant Tumors at the leading edge of your creep spread every 25s. Each Tumor extends creep and spawns a new Tumor. This is a significant APM investment but one of the biggest macro advantages available to Zerg.

Drone Timing

Zerg's core decision every 30 seconds is drone or unit? Too few drones and your economy collapses. Too many and you die to the push you didn't make units for. Scouting determines the answer.

A basic Zerg rule: drone until you scout aggression, then switch entirely to units until safe, then return to drones. Mastering this reaction loop is what separates low-to-mid ladder Zergs from high-ladder Zergs.

Army Composition

Ling / Bane / Hydra

The most common ZvT composition. Banelings explode on bio, Lings add speed and surround, Hydras deal reliable mid-range damage. Upgrade with +1/+1 carapace and melee/missile weapons.

Roach / Ravager

Powerful mid-game composition against Terran and Protoss. Roaches are tanky; Ravagers have a bile ability that can break Force Fields. Effective at punishing greedy expands before Colossus or Storm appears.

Muta / Ling / Bane

ZvT harassment composition. Mutas harass mineral lines while Ling/Bane pressure the front. Requires splitting attention. Mutas die to Thors/Vikings — scout for them first.

Ultralisk / Ling / Bane

Late-game ZvT composition when Ultralisks are fully upgraded. Ultralisks absorb EMP and tank bio fire; Lings clean up. Loses to massed Siege Tanks in pure defensive setups.

Matchup Notes

ZvT

Zerg vs Terran

Terran is aggressive in the mid game. Expect Hellion run-bys, Marine drops, and Banshee harassment. Keep Queens near mineral lines. In the late game, Zerg scales past Terran with Ultralisk or Broodlord tech — survive the mid-game and win the lategame.

ZvP

Zerg vs Protoss

Protoss kills you with Colossus + Immortal mid-game pushes or blink Stalker pressure. Roach/Ravager can break Force Fields and bust Protoss defences before Colossus finishes. Spore Crawlers at each base are mandatory — watch for Oracle harassment on mineral workers.

ZvZ

Zerg vs Zerg

ZvZ is decided in the first 3 minutes. Baneling busts, speedling all-ins, or fast roach pressure can end the game before full saturation. Both players are trying to drone while keeping enough units to survive the other's all-in. Scout constantly and react fast.

Common Mistakes

  • Missing inject cycles — 40-second gaps in inject are 4 lost Larvae per miss
  • Droning past the supply to react — when you see aggression, stop droning, start making units immediately
  • Not spreading creep — mid-game fights off-creep are significantly harder
  • Forgetting Metabolic Boost (Zergling Speed) — unupgraded Zerglings are slow and die for free
  • Running Mutas into Thors without scouting — 8 Thors end a Muta flock in seconds
  • Not making Spine Crawlers vs Protoss — Oracle damage on mineral lines compounds faster than you repair
